A Quick Visit to Virginia

// August 14th, 2008 // A Day Down Under

So i made a quick stop over in Roanoke, Virginia last week. It is my team mate Owen’s home town, and was on the way to Rochester for the race up there. It is a really nice little town, and was nice to spend a little bit of time in Virginia. A huge thank you to his parents, Chris and Lenora for their kind hospitality, and for the fantastic food!

This is the famous Roanoake Star. It is up on top of Mill Mountain, and towers over the city of Roanoke. It is 88.5 ft tall, with 2,000 ft of neon tubing. It requires 17,500 watts of power to illuminate the neon tubes!

You wouldn’t believe this, but during our visit to the top (a nice long climb on the bikes), i overheard the other visitors talking. They sounded Australian, so we got talking, and it turns out the guy in the picture grew up in Carnegie, Victoria! What are the odds of that? Carnegie is such a small place, and i guess Roanoke isn’t the USA’s most well-known place either… The people in the photo are the Aussies, but they didn’t know i was taking this photo – it has a good story though!

You know you are in a rough place when the police station has a statue of a policeman body-slamming some guy who just broke the law! Roanoke Police Station:

Owen has a couple of bad-ass scooters. Obviously they don’t compare to my super-bad-ass one, but they are still pretty cool, and good fun to hoot around on!
We couldn’t decide which of the photos to use, the one of us being friendly…

… Or of us being some hard core scooter bandits. So i decided to put both up anyway. More photos usually entertain the readers a bit more, if i still have any!

Here is another road sign. For those who have read the Tommy Nankervis blog postings for some time now, you may remember a post from a long time back, where i posted various road signs from Australia and The States. Well, i have seen golf cart signs before, but this one is exceptional, as it just has such fine detail, including in the golf clubs in the golf bags!

So there is a brief update, mainly to show some of my recent photos. Hopefully i have some more good posting to follow this weekend, from the Downer’s Grove USA Criterium Championships.

Thank you for keeping the comments rolling, i always look forward to hearing from everyone!

    Good post Tommy. When are you going to get me a scooter like that? I want the yellow one, then you can drive your awesome “blue” one around, and I can have my own! Good luck with your last race up in Chicago. Race fast and come home soon! XOXO
